A trunnion ball valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a trunnion-mounted ball to control the flow of fluid through the valve. The ball is connected to a stem that runs through the center of the valve body. The stem is connected to a handwheel or lever that is used to open and close the valve.
When the valve is in the open position, the ball is aligned with the flow of fluid. When the valve is in the closed position, the ball is positioned across the flow of fluid, which blocks the flow.
A trunnion ball valve’s structure is different from the ordinary ball valve. The main difference between trunnion ball valves and ordinary ball valves lies in their stems. The stem of a trunnion ball valve has two seats, one at each end of the body cavity, which can be used toseal the medium in both directions.

Advantages Of A Trunnion Ball Valve
Reduced Likelihood of leaking
The trunnion ball valve has a number of advantages over other types of valves. The most significant advantage is that the trunnion ball valve is much less likely to leak than other types of valves. The reason for this is that the ball is supported on both sides by the trunnion, which prevents the ball from moving out of alignment with the seat.
This design also makes the trunnion ball valve much easier to maintain than other types of valves.
Versatility
Trunnion ball valves are effective in high-pressure situations as well as low-pressure situations. Floating ball valves create a seal when the ball comes under high pressure from the which is being regulated. This requires high pressure to be effective. But in a trunnion ball valve, the spring-loaded seats can stop the flow even under low-pressure situations.
Reduces Cost
Any additional pressure is absorbed by the trunnion and the stem of the valve, which minimizes the friction between the ball and the seats, resulting in lower operating torque. This makes them less likely to break from wear and tear over time, increasing their life expectancy. This also takes away the need to have a large actuator.
